THE NATIONAL CODEX COMMITTEE
The National Codex Committee (NCC) is a consultative group to the Government of Ghana on food safety issues and is made up of Stakeholder Institutions who contribute in ensuring food safety in Ghana. The NCC has oversight responsibility for all Codex activities in Ghana.
The stakeholder institutions that make up the NCC are:
The Chairmanship of the NCC alternates between the Ministries of Trade and Industry, Food and Agriculture, Fisheries & Aquaculture Development and Health.

WHAT THE NCC DOES
- Advises the Government of Ghana on implications of food standards, quality and safety in relation to food trade.
- Constitutes Technical or Expert Committees on subject matters in relation to Committees of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC).
- Formulates national Positions on relevant subject matters for the Codex Alimentarius Commission.
- Identifies organizations/institutions to take actions on food safety issues and where necessary, commission studies to generate data.
SUBSIDIARY COMMITTEES OF THE NCC
The NCC has established sub-committees on subject and commodity matters corresponding to Committees of the Codex Alimentarius Commission. These sub-committees are made up of Experts representing relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies, Research and Academia, Consumer Organizations and Industry. The sub-committees are:
THE NATIONAL CODEX CONTACT POINT/ NCC SECRETARIAT
The National Codex contact point is the secretariat for the NCC and responsible for maintaining liaison with the Codex Alimentarius Commission. The Contact Point also coordinates Codex activities in Ghana and it’s located in the Standards Division if the Ghana Standards Authority.
CORE FUNCTIONS OF THE CONTACT POINT
The Contact Point performs the following functions:
- Act as the link between Ghana and the Codex Secretariat in Rome as well as other member countries;
- Liaise with host countries of Subsidiary bodies/Task Forces functioning under the CAC;
- Coordinate and promote all relevant Codex activities within Ghana;
- Train delegates and experts on Codex issues.
